Community Outreach & Engagement to Support Implementation of the Regional Decarbonization Framework
Year Complete: 2024
Local Government: San Diego County
Local Foundation: San Diego County
Project Purpose
To develop an equitable, inclusive community engagement process that supports the engagement of impacted refugee, asylee and immigrant communities in the implementation of the County of San Diego’s Regional Decarbonization Framework.
Key Lessons Learned
The most important factor for developing a community engagement process is trust-based partnerships, which must be established among all partners in order for equity-centered conversations to be had. Building this trust takes time and requires follow through.
When working with local government entities, put all of your asks on the table. Have fluid conversations with community around what your respective priorities are and find ways to move forward together.
Always ask if additional forms of communication are needed (i.e. text messaging instead of email).
Find ways to make topics relatable for community members. Decarbonization and climate change are complex but relating them to human priorities can help with their translation.
